From my perspective, "becoming who you are" is a life-long process!
It never ends--or shouldn't--until you pass on. And, then, if you believe
in reincarnation (like I do), you might find that you will forever continue
the process of becoming who you are.
I enjoy reading about the life of Thomas Merton, because one can follow
his process of "becoming." What Merton thought he was, was to be,
when young was quite something unexpected by the time he made his
transition. When finally being ordained a priest, would he have thought
that in time he would be having conversations with the Dalai Lama.
Most of the time we can only look back--via hindsight--at this process
of becoming. And it surely can turn out interesting, sometimes even
adventurous!
But always in my mind is the lingering question: why "become?" What's
going on with us, with sentient consciousness in general? Trying to
look at the greater cosmic picture, I hope there's a point to all this
becoming, this growing, this developing unto ever great maturity and
unfolding. I like to think it's all heading somewhere--not just for us
individually, though that's naturally personally important, but *collectively.*
Guess my question is enfolded in teleology, in cosmology ultimately.
