BACK COVER: "Jesus said it first, Thomas Merton made it clear, and
James Martin, if you can believe it, makes it even clearer." -- Fr.
Richard Rohr, OFM, Center for Action and Contemplation, Albuqueque, NM.
"As an aside, this example points out the need for attentiveness and
discernment in the quet to become our true selves. In this case, one
could argue that, since I didn't want to work in a hospital (as a
chaplain), this ws simply how God made me and I should just accept it.
(That is, you could argue that my true self just wasn't interested in
hospital work.) But my novice director wisely sawthat this
resistance was really an unfreedom, something that would keep me from
growing more as a loving person.
So how do you determine if something is an essential part of your true
self or simply an unfreedom that needs to be challenged? Good
question. Basically, one has to ask, "Is this part of myself keeping
me from being more loving and generous? Is this keeping me from being
closer to God and to other people?" If the answer is yes, perhaps it
may be time to consider how you could move away from whatever
prevents you from being more loving and generous.
Still, as I said, I was terrified."
